VSU's Odum Library sits at the heart of the VSU campus and provides materials and space for students, staff, faculty, and community members to use. With more than 530,000 bound volumes and more than 64,000 full text journals available through GALILEO, Odum Library fulfills its purpose: "to be a leading educational and cultural resource of the University."

The VSU Archives and Special Collections, housed on the fourth floor of Odum Library, "supports the University’s commitment to scholarly and creative work, enhances instructional effectiveness, encourages faculty scholarly pursuits, and supports research in selective areas of institutional strength focused on regional need by collecting, preserving, and providing access to records of enduring historical value documenting the history and development of VSU and the surrounding South Georgia region and in support of VSU curriculum."

VSU's Women's and Gender Studies program is "an interdisciplinary field of scholarship devoted to the study of women and gender as a social construction, one that intersects with class, race, age, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and sexual identity. Our faculty and students are both scholars and feminist activists, pursuing intellectual work and achievement with a vision of social justice."

The purpose of the American Library Association is "to promote library service and librarianship." The stated mission is, “To provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.”

The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency founded in 1965, is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States.
