About

Welcome

This guide was created to help you understand how to create a LibGuide and customize it to your needs. You can use the tabs on the left side of this page to navigate through the guide. It may help to go in the order of the tabs as they appear when setting up your guide. For more information, please see the Other Resources page of this guide.

HIST 6216/MLIS 7886 Students

This is a general guide for understanding LibGuides and how to create them. Some of the information in this guide will not pertain to you or you will need to follow additional instructions and guidelines set forth by your instructor. I have added additional notes in the guide to alert you of areas that may be different for you in terms of your project.

About the fields

Choose Layout or Reuse: Unless you have a guide in mind to copy the layout from, I would suggest the "Start Fresh" option.

Guide Name: This is what is shown at the top of the guide.

Guide Description: A short description of the guide can be put here. This will appear on every page of the guide under the name.

Guide Type: The three types of guides we use at VSU are Course Guides, Subject Guides, and Topic Guides.

  • Course Guides: Created for a specific course. These are generally named directly after the course and used only for that particular course. Example: ENGL 1102 IA, POLS 4100
  • Subject Guides: Created for a specific subject/major at VSU. These are generally universal across the subject and can be used in multiple courses. Examples: Anthropology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Topic Guides: These guides include anything that does not directly relate to a course or a subject, or can be used across multiple disciplines. Examples: Copyright and Fair Use, Popular Books at Odum, Literature Reviews

Group Assignment: We do not use groups. Leave this as Do not assign to a group.

Password: A password can be set to limit access to a guide. Patrons must have both the link and the correct password to view the guide.

Share Guide Content: Allows other LibGuide Users to use the content of your guide. You can choose if you want to allow your content to be reused by others. The default is set to Community, but some librarians chose to keep their guides internal (to be used only by other VSU LibGuide users), or private.
