Borrowing FAQs

How Do I Search for Books?

You can search GIL-Find, our online catalog, or you can browse a specific collection like Popular Books in our Collections Browser. Click on Finding Books for more information on how to search the catalog.

How Are the Books Organized?

We use the Library of Congress Classification System at Odum. This means that books are organized by subject and assigned a call number. LOC call numbers are a bit different from the Dewey Decimal System call numbers that you might be familiar with from public libraries. Check out our guide to reading call numbers and finding books on the shelf or ask a library staff member. We are always happy to help!

How Do I Check Out Books?

Bring the book and your 1Card to either of the circulation desks or the reference desk. The library staff member on duty can check out your book to you. For more information, see our guide on checking out.

How Long Can I Keep These?

Popular Books can be checked out for 28 days. For more information, see Borrowing Privileges.

How Many Books Can I Check Out?

There is no item limit for VSU students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, or staff.

The Library Doesn't Have This Book. Is There Any Way I Can Get It?

If you're looking for a resource not available at Odum Library, you can use GIL Express to borrow books from any of the University System of Georgia (USG) Libraries or Inter-Library Loans to borrow from libraries outside our system!

Can I Suggest a Book?

If there is a book you love that you think we should have in the collection, you can let us know by filling out our online request form or by putting a suggestion in the box located at the Popular Book Collection.
