Helping Students Avoid Plagiarism

Promote Academic Integrity in the Syllabus

  • Include clear directions and expectations for assignments. Tell students which citation style you expect them to use. Explain the consequences for failing to cite properly, academic dishonesty, and plagiarism.

Educate Students

  • Make sure your students understand what plagiarism is.

  • Teach your students how to quote and paraphrase. Teach students the difference between quoting and paraphrasing. Include examples of proper paraphrasing and bad paraphrasing.

Help Students Learn Citation Styles

  • Explain the benefits of using the corrected citation style.

Research Skills

  • Set clear research expectations and take steps to ensure your students have the research skills needed to complete the assignment. Consider scheduling time for the class to work with a librarian. A librarian can teach your students how to find and evaluate appropriate resources. You can schedule a library instruction class, learn more, or call the Reference department at 229-333-7149.
