Blazer Summer Research Institute 2021: Library Research: Citing Your Sources

Database Citation Tools

The databases in Galileo include a citation tool to help you correctly cite your sources. You will find a link to the Cite tool on the right hand side of the detailed record of the article. Below you will see an image of the citation tool in action.

Image showing sample citation using the database's built-in citation tool. The button Cite on the right hand side of the record page will generate a citation. You can pick from a list of different styles. However, it's very important to note that the citation will not always be correct because it is generated by a computer. Always double check before adding to your paper. If you have any questions about the citation style, contact the Reference Desk.

Why are citations important?

Correctly citing your sources is important in any project or paper when you gather information from other authors. If the idea you are writing in your paper did not originate in your mind you need to cite the source. Failure to correctly cite the source of your information is plagairism.

The library has many resources avialable for students to assist with correctly citing sources in the body of your paper as well as in the bibliography. The reference desk houses copies of the different style guides and the reference librarians are always willing to help with questions about citations. There are also many online resources available for students to use when citing sources. The library has compiled a list of credible online resources for citation style guides.
