ARID 3370 Crane: Finding Building Code Information

This guide provides assistance for students conducting research for Professor Crane's Construction Methods and Building Regulations course.

Local Building Codes

Local building codes are often posted on local government--city or county--websites. For instance,

Valdosta City:

https://www.valdostacity.com/inspections/building-code-compliance

https://www.valdostacity.com/inspections/building-construction-codes

Lowndes County:

http://www.lowndescounty.com/DocumentCenter/View/3402/State-Minimum-Standard-Codes-Ordinance-PDF

To locate other building codes for specific localities, you can Google the name of the city or county and then search within the site. Be sure that you're reaching the correct website for the city or county, not the tourist or downtown development commission, for instance. Often the official site will end with the domain .gov or .org, but not always.

You can search for terms such as building codes, building ordinances, code compliance, inspections, permit requirements, for instance. You can also browse the website looking for sections such as departments (often inspections or building) or government (municipal code & ordinances), for instance.
