HIST 6216: Civil Rights: The Little Rock Crisis: Little Rock Reaction

The Georgia Journal- Reaction to Little Rock

The September 28, 1957, Georgia Journal featured quotes from politicians and other papers regarding their opinions of President Eisenhower's authoritative stance on the Little Rock Crisis and sending in federal troops to keep the peace. Some agreed with his decision, while others believed he overstepped his boundaries and abused his power as President. It is intriguing to note that opinions are not universal based on location.

The Minneapolis Tribune and The Detroit Free Press believed Eisenhower was correct while The Kansas City Star believed it was nothing more than a political bargaining chip on both sides for power.

Mixed Opinions: The Georgia Journal Page 3

The Miami Herald and The Des Moines Register both believe that Eisenhower was within his power to stop the insurrection, The Indianapolis Star however believes that he went overboard to gain the favor of the Black voters in the next election cycle. The Portland Oregonian used the Little Rock Crisis as a warning to other states.

The New York Times simply states that Eisenhower's delayed action avoided mounting conflict while The Chattanooga Times and The Atlanta Constitution turn to their fellow Southerners to end the conflict and stand behind Eisenhower's intervention.
