Nature Journaling : Home

This guide is for the 2024 Nature Journaling program with Odum Library

What is nature journaling?

What is nature journaling?

  • A canvas
  • A polaroid
  • A playground
  • A scrapbook

It's a chance to observe the natural world within our senses and document it.

"But I'm not artistic or creative..."

Don't let that be a hurdle. Take a few moments and use a page--or the spread of pages--to capture a moment and reflect on it. Use markers, pencils, tape, glue, crayons or stamps to add to the journal.

Why nature journaling?

What does nature journaling do?

Journaling gives clarity.

Plus, sharing selections from your journaling can help make the archives more diverse, authentic, and representative of the student experience.

How do I make a nature journal?

To get started, pick up a free nature journal near the Odum Library reference desk  (or make your own)

  • Feel inspired? Get started!
  • Need inspiration or guidance? Try these prompts:
    • What do you notice?
    • What is beautiful to you?
    • What is mysterious?
    • Can you take another look at something that made you turn away?
    • Find an insect, leaf, plant, lichen, animal, rock or body of water, and sketch it. Or describe it--what senses are activated?
  • Share some pages with us!
